Founder’s Letter

It’s Monday morning in the studio.

The first coffee of the day is beginning to do its job, and as is customary, Chris and I are chewing the fat about whatever grabbed our attention over the weekend. Lately, it’s been hard to ignore the same theme — more AI stories. More headlines about the sheer volume of material being uploaded to platforms. More speculation about what it all means for our industry, and for musicians everywhere.

Stories of platforms allegedly favouring AI-generated content. Reports that the EU is pushing for clearer identification of AI-made works. Rumblings about policy shifts and uncertainty. Podcasts featuring respected voices in our industry — many expressing confusion, disappointment, and, in some cases, genuine concern at how quickly everything seems to be changing.

And then — in a quiet moment — it struck me.

Instead of obsessing over identifying artificial creation… what if we created something that celebrated the opposite?

What if, instead of reacting to AI, we stood up and recognised human craft?

There was a pause.

Chris said, “Yeah… we should do that. We could build a register.”

And just like that, Human Made began.

The Beginning of Human Made

The weeks that followed were a blur. Our normal work continued, but every spare moment was spent shaping what would become the Human Made Register.

What would it need to achieve?
How would it work?
What value would it bring to creators and listeners alike?

Then came the long hours of development. The iteration. The back-and-forth. Chris would show me early versions of the site and I’d say, “What if we could do this?” or “Can we add that?” — and I’d see the look. The one that says he knows exactly how much work that “one small feature” really means.

But step by step, feature by feature, conversation by conversation, we moved closer.

Closer to building a place where we celebrate what it means to be:

  • An inspired creative
  • A brilliant engineer
  • A producer
  • A mastering and Atmos engineer
  • A designer
  • A filmmaker
  • A musician

A place to recognise human-made album art, videos, recordings, and the extraordinary talent that reflects, questions, and elevates the human condition.

But most of all — a place for community.

Why Human Made Exists

Human Made isn’t about resisting technology.

It’s about recognising the irreplaceable spark that comes from lived experience — from flawed beauty, from risk, emotion, instinct, and soul.

Technology will continue to evolve. That is certain.

But human expression remains singular.

Our intention is not only to advocate for and promote human-made works, but to reinvest in creatives — to ensure that the spark of humanness in the art forms we love does not dim under the weight of artificial noise, but flourishes.

Over time, Human Made will expand to support other artisan and creative practices. We will continue building tools, services, and platforms that allow human creators to stand clearly, proudly, and unmistakably behind their work.

Because transparency matters.
Recognition matters.
People matter.

To the Creators

We value your art.
We value your courage.
We value your craft.

And we welcome your voice in shaping what Human Made becomes.

This is not just a register.
It’s a commitment.

Keep watching.

We have plans.
And they’re ambitious.

With deep respect to the extraordinary talent across this world — thank you for following your passions. For sharing your stories, your emotions, your perspective. For comforting the weary. For inspiring the restless. For giving us the rhythms that carry us through life.

Without You

Without you…

we may as well just be machines.
